How to Change Your Career in 5 Simple Steps

May 30, 2024

Pivoting your career is a common and necessary way to create a career you enjoy. Today, I will give you 5 simple steps to pivot to any job you want. Keep scrolling for the formula.

1/ Create a vision for what you want next.

Break it down into 3 sections.

→ Role:

What tasks/projects/achievements do you want to do?

What do you want to minimize?

How much do you want to work with people vs heads-down?

→ Company:

What are some key characteristics of your ideal company?

Do you want a service or product based company?

→ Culture:

What kinds of people do you want to work with?

How do you want to receive feedback?

What do you want your work life balance to look like?

2/ Study your new direction

Analyze job descriptions objectively.

→ Instead of reading through a job description and thinking “Have I done this before?” or “Can I do this?”

→ Ask yourself “What are the top 3 skills/experiences the hiring team is looking for?”

→ Keep track of industry/role-specific keywords and projects

3/ Identify transferable skills

Use the top 3 skills you’ve identified above to filter through your experiences.

→ No matter how big or small of the project/experience, if you’ve done anything remotely similar then it counts.

4/ Be honest with yourself

There may be some skills that you don’t have or experiences you haven’t done.

→ Use this as an opportunity to upskill.

→ Ask for more projects related to this from your current role.

→ Or find a small business/startup you can even volunteer for 1 project on.

→ Consider some more entry level titles you can apply to instead.

5/ Obsess over the company

Research the company and go DEEP.

→ Read reviews on Glassdoor.

→ Listen to podcasts their CEO was on.

→ Read the latest news articles about the company.

→ What is their product/service?

→ How do they make money?

→ Why are they hiring for this role?

→ You have access to a limited amount of knowledge so feel free to hypothesize.

Utilize these 5 steps and you'll pivot into any job you want.

"Your time is limited, don't waste it living someone else's life." – Steve Jobs

When you’re ruthlessly pursuing something, its easy to forget if it was even your idea in the first place.

But taking time to reflect every day is helpful.

Once you start to pursue what YOU actually want.

And you know WHY you want it.

You’ll know when you need to pivot, refine or change your strategy.
