I’ve talked to hundred’s of job seekers and its kinda scary how many think the screening interview is useless, but then are left wondering why they don’t get to the next round.
Using the STARC Method, a structured storytelling approach to answering interview questions, you’ll be able to convey your value to the recruiter.
Here’s a breakdown:
- Situation: Provide context about the specific situation or challenge.
- Task: Clearly state the objective or goal you were assigned.
- Actions: Explain the steps you took to solve the problem.
- Results: Share the positive outcomes, ideally quantified.
- Connections: Link the story directly back to the job you’re interviewing for.
Example of the STARC Method:
- Situation: "We were missing $500k in revenue due to sweater stockouts on the East Coast."
- Task: "My task was to recapture the $500k in lost revenue."
- Actions: "I analyzed inventory data and proposed reallocating incoming sweater stock to East Coast centers."
- Results: "We recovered the $500k and optimized our future seasonal distribution."
- Connections: "At Stitch Fix, I demonstrated my ability to leverage data to make strategic decisions, which aligns with the responsibilities of this data analyst role at Lyft."
The STARC method helps you craft a clear, compelling story that highlights your skills and connects them perfectly to the job you're aiming for.
For your next interview, here are a few steps you can take to maximize your chances:
- Analyze the job description for 3-4 key skills.
- Prepare a "Tell me about yourself" response highlighting 2 relevant achievements.
